Therapeutic Word of the Day: Purpose

“Without a purpose, you have little direction. Work to discover yours, but be patient in the process.”

As yourself this, why are you here? What are you supposed to do? I believe we all have a purpose, and at different times of our lives, our purpose changes. Our purpose at 20 may not be the same as it is at 50. Many are afraid to answer this question, as they feel they are locked into it or fear it may not work out.

I see this question often with my college age clients. Today, many kids are afraid of the future and do not know what to do with their lives. Most want to know “right now” what they want to do, but do not understand life is a process. You may not find your purpose today, or even tomorrow.

Give yourself time to find your purpose, but do not ignore it. Try different things, and stop telling yourself what you cannot do. Be realistic with yourself, but do not listen if others say it is impossible.
