Therapeutic Word of the Day: Mania

“A painful, restless energy. It is not a “high” people enjoy. Mania can be as devastating as depression.”

Mania is often misunderstood. A component of Bipolar Disorder, Mania is often viewed as the “high” state, while depression is viewed as a “low” state. Mania is often viewed as a high energy period where a person feels very good and is highly creative and productive. I have seen drug users say they wish they could live in a manic state as they would feel good and get things done.

Mania for most does not feel good, in fact, many have told me Mania is worse than depression. Imagine being so restless you cannot sit still without physical pain in your legs. Imagine wanting to sleep, but not being able to with your mind producing thoughts at breakneck speed. Imagine being in such a grumpy mood you cannot stand yourself, as much as others. Imagine being so impulsive you do whatever comes to mind, as you cannot slow down to process your choices? This is mania.

While some can be highly productive while manic, many are in fact the opposite who do not know what to do with themselves. Mania is a dangerous state, as impulsiveness is so great people have traveled to other states, later not remembering why they left. I have had some clients tell me they do not remember much of their manic states, and some have exited them in jail with no memories how they got there. In short, mania is very serious and highly dangerous to the person experiencing it.
