Therapeutic Word of the Day: Insight

“We often lack insight into ourselves and our problems as we are afraid of what we will find. Responsibility is feared.”

Most of the problems we have we do to ourselves. Addiction is a good example of this. Someone who is addicted is an addict for a reason. The addiction serves a purpose. For many, addiction allows the user to ignore or push back the past to dull pain. While this dulling is a short term positive, the long-term effects are negative.

For most of our problems, we ourselves are part of the cause. We do things at times to sabotage ourselves or to prevent change. This is why insight into ourselves is a benefit. If we understand the reasons why we do things and the needs gained from them we can do better at the things we want. We often fear insight as we do not want to see we often are our worst enemy. It is easier and more convenient to blame others for our situations. If we continue to blame others and do not look within, we will never achieve what we want because we will not take the responsibility to achieve it.
