Therapeutic Word of the Day: Giving

“Giving includes time, energy, effort, and love. Gifts are a lesser form of giving. Focus on what you are leaving behind.”

It is sad that we as a society considers the giving of physical gifts to be the point of the holiday season. After two months of Christmas commercials, it can leave anyone cynical. The message is clear, gifts and only gifts matter. If you cannot provide the most expensive gifts, you are a bad person and a failure and hate your family. Here is a question; how much time have you spent with your family, to be there for them? If you are working two jobs to have expensive things and gifts, what message are you sending them?

Giving of time, effort and love are what the holidays are about. Spend time with your family and get to know them. They are not perfect, but neither are you. Give gifts as well, but they are not what is important. One day you will not be here and will only be a memory. Will people remember you as a person, or of all the things you bought them that they no longer use?
