Therapeutic Word of the Day: Failure

“All fail. It is a natural part of life. Do not let fear of failure stop you from living life. Failures are learning experiences.”

Fear of failure is a growing problem for many of our teenagers and young adults. Many of the people I see are fearful of the future and do not know what they want to do for their lives. They fear a world where they will be in massive debt to gain an education, an economy that is unstable, and a world that is unsafe. To cope with these feelings, many have become addicted, some to drugs and alcohol, others to technology. In the end, many delay their entry into the real world because they are afraid to fail.

No one wants to fail. Regardless, it is a natural part of life. At times, we will fail no because of some internal failing, but of outside forces, we cannot control. Even if we do fail due to actions, learning from these actions helps us gain information about ourselves.

In the end, failure is a learning experience required for success. The next time you fail at something, learn from it, but do not beat yourself up and feel like a failure.
