Therapeutic Word of the Day: Coping Skills

“Only you can define what helps you cope. It is your job to find healthy coping skills. Try new things, and be less rigid.”

Coping skills sound like something easy. How hard is it to find things you enjoy? If you have depression, however, finding coping skills is a challenge. It is hard to find something you are interested in if you do not have the energy or motivation.

Sometimes it takes a lot of creativity to find new coping skills. We often get stuck in patterns of thought and behavior. We avoid new activities and ideas that are strange. We limit ourselves, and in the end, live a very rigid life. Sometimes, we need to take a chance and try something new, something different.

If you have depression or find your current set of coping skills are becoming stale, try something new. There is no guarantee you will enjoy it, however, you will have more knowledge about yourself. Over time, the more things you try, the more coping skills you will gather.
